I agree – jute bags have a lot going for them. They give people in Third World countries a source of responsible, non-harmful income, they replace cotton crops which are incredibly water and chemical intensive, they have a gorgeous natural feel and are long lasting. If companies make an attractive, full colour, good looking one their bags are often used not only for carrying things home, but for day to day use afterwards as well. Second only to a personal recommendation – and you know what they say about word of mouth!

This is a lovely idea. I’ve already seen these bags in local organic shops and I’ve picked one up from Sainsburys. As long as bigger shops support green bags, they have a chance of replacing the plastic bags eventually.
